Brian Wilson Brian Wilson is Chair of Britain's Energy Coast West Cumbria. He is a former Member of Parliament in the United Kingdom and remains a member of the Privy Council which is made up of senior serving and former politicians. Between 1997 and 2005, when he retired from politics, he held six Government posts under Tony Blair including Scottish Education Minister, UK Trade Minister, UK Energy Minster and Prime Minister’s Special Representative on Overseas Trade. Since leaving politics, Brian has developed an extensive business and academic portfolio. Reflecting the fact that his last Ministerial post was in Energy, a number of his current roles are energy-related. He is a director of Amec Nuclear, Scottish Resources Group and Greenrock Energy as well as chairing his own consultancy company. He is Energy Policy adviser to Lews Castle College within the UHI Millennium Institute. Also within his varied portfolio, he is a director of Celtic Football Club, a consultant to Diageo plc, chairman of Flying Matters (which promotes sustainable aviation), Visiting Professor of Government and Media at Glasgow Caledonian University and chairman of Harris Tweed Hebrides – a recently formed company on the Isle of Lewis which is committed to maintaining production of the famous fabric. Brian was born in Dunoon, Argyll, in 1948 and educated at Dundee University (MA Hons) and University College, Cardiff, where he took a Postgraduate qualification in Journalism Studies. Before entering politics, Mr Wilson worked as a journalist and was the recipient of a number of awards. In 1987, he was elected as Labour Member of the UK Parliament for the Cunninghame North constituency in the west of Scotland. For 17 of his 18 years as an MP, he also held front-bench positions both in Opposition and then in Government. He did not seek re-election in 2005, mainly for family reasons and in order to pursue other interests.
