Councillor Mike Mitchelson 

Councillor Mike Mitchelson is Leader of Carlisle City Council.

On leaving school Mike Mitchelson worked in the family milk retail business before setting up his own newsagents business in Brampton, which he has run for more than 30 years. He is also the Sub-Postmaster for Brampton, taking over the town’s post office in October 1997. Prior to his election to Carlisle City Council he was National President of the National Federation of Retail Newsagents in 1994/95 and a Board Member of the organisation since 1990. He is a Non-Executive Chairman of Newtrade Publishing, a small publishing company based in London.

First elected as a Conservative Councillor for Carlisle City Council in November 1995, he became Leader of the Council in May 1999 and is also Chairman of the Executive Committee and the Portfolio Holder for Promoting Carlisle. Mike is a member of the Carlisle Renaissance and Carlisle Leisure Ltd boards and acts as the Council’s representative on various outside Committees such as, Local Government Association (various), Carlisle Partnership, Cumbria Strategic Partnership and the North West Regional Assembly.

Cllr Mitchelson lives in near Brampton, Carlisle and is married with two children and two grandchildren.
