Regeneration Delivery Boards

The establishment of four geographically focused regeneration delivery boards represents a major step forward in Cumbria’s economic regeneration.

The need to improve the delivery of social and economic regeneration activity has been on ongoing and important issue for the County. It was a long held belief that Cumbria’s economic development activity is fragmented and insufficiently focused to be transformational.

It was recognised that some areas – in particular West Cumbria and Furness – needed to boost existing activity to grasp the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity presented by the nationwide shift to a low carbon economy. In the areas of Carlisle and Eden and South Lakeland, it was recognised that a new, better coordinated way of addressing regeneration priorities in response to unique and shared challenges was required.

Cumbria Vision, together with the Northwest Regional Development Agency and Cumbria County Council, has been working on this new structure – which has involved building on existing structures and creating completely new ones. The ultimate aim has been to bring a renewed focus to delivering those projects of greatest benefit to businesses and communities in particular geographical areas.

The proposed structure went out to consultation across the public and private sector. The details are contained within the Statement of Intent document written by Cumbria Vision’s Chairman Roger Liddle.

The Outcome

The result has been the establishment of four new regeneration delivery boards – all operating under the strategic guidance of Cumbria Vision and responsible for delivering the goals set out under the Cumbria Economic Strategy 2009-2019 and the Cumbria Sub regional Action Plan 2009-2012 in their own geographical areas of responsibility.

Each of the Delivery Boards is private sector led, with the emphasis on selection based on the specific skills and attributes each member or director brings. Private sector members bring vast experience of those industries important to their, while all public sector partners are represented.

In turn the boards are supported by executive teams led by a Programme Director.
